Corfu
The beautiful Achilleion Palace, built in 1890 by Empress Elizabeth of Austria known as Sissi, and the Mon Repos Palace are two must-see sights surrounded by lavish gardens with magnificent views. The caves of Paleokastritsa, the castle of Angelokastro for beautiful sunsets, the views from the so-called Kaiser’s Throne on Pelekas hill and the picturesque resort of Kassiopi are some of the attractions around the island calling for a daily excursion.
For a drive away from the crowds try the villages of the Pantokratoras mountain on the North, like the well-preserved Old Peritheia, or the protected wetland of the Korissia lagoon and the beautiful village of Hlomos on the South.
Traditional tavernas serving the delicious local dishes, like fish bourdeto (spicy tomato sauce), chicken or beef pastitsada (the local ragu) with pasta and sofrito (beef in white garlic sauce), as well as high-end gourmet restaurants and cocktail bars will introduce you to the unique island’s lifestyle, a special mix of tradition and cosmopolitanism like the many different foreign rules that have influenced the modern face of Corfu.
