The most privileged spot of the Athenian Riviera, Sounio has beautiful beaches for swimming in crystal clear waters and rich archaeological heritage. Within easy reach from Athens, it offers nevertheless the experience of an island-style environment. The famous ancient temple of Poseidon (444–440 BC), built with local marble, is a must-visit in a beautiful location overlooking the Aegean. The sunset here is legendary. The sea shore has beautiful beaches like Cape Sounio, Lagonissi and Anavissos, with sunbeds and beach sports, but also picturesque little bays for a more relaxed swim.

Ancient Greek Theater Recreation

The five star hotels of the area have nice restaurants to try gourmet greek cuisine, while there are also traditional fish tavernas in villages like Palaia Fokea. In the nearby port of Lavrio you can stroll around the old industrial buildings, visit the historic 19th century mines, now a museum and cultural space, and taste an ouzo with meze in the local tavernas. Athens and the cosmopolitan Southern Suburbs of the city, like Vouliagmeni, Varkiza and Glyfada can be accessed in less than an hour drive along a picturesque route by the sea.
